Truth and history are funny things

Since Lora Thomas has decided to air dirty laundry to the press, let us examine some of her own dirty laundry from the past.
Years ago (six if my calendar is right) the Douglas county Republican Central Committee selected then County Treasurer Diane Holbert to fill the county commissioner vacancy.
Diane faced Abe Laydon the primary and lost. But Diane’s appointed term did not expire until January of the following year left when Dave Weaver resigned to take a Trump appointment as United States Marshall.
Lora wanted to seat Abe early so that she could get him “the lay of the land.” The reader can decide what that means. Lora’s master plan was to push Diane out of commissioner back into treasure spot, she told me this in conversation. She needed this to happen. Mind you I was part of the TEAM who ran Dave Gill‘s successful campaign for County treasurer and had a vested interest in Dave filling the vacancy left by Diane, which is why these conversations even took place.
Abe won the primary and was the GOP candidate so Lora wanted him appointed because in her mind that positively benefited her. Lora DID NOT want to appoint Dave Gill, who also won the primary for the currently vacant treasurer seat…. Because if she appointed Dave, there would be no place to push Diane back into.
No, let me ask you what benefits the people of Douglas County more moving one republican out for another republican or moving a Republican into a seat that’s currently empty? What was better for the people? What was better for those departments? And who was the only person who would benefit from the politics that were being played?
It’s a pattern you can see again and again and again.
In her mind, at that point, Abe was going to be “her boy” and vote the way she told him. She sold her supporters on that idea for months. She needed a buttress against the somewhat erratic voting of the late Commissioner Partridge. All throughout the race she maintained that Abe would be voting with her. That Abe would be her boy.
I would not presume to speak for Abe Laydon, but I think he has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is his own person when it comes to casting votes. Lora has said many times in public that support of Abe was a mistake. Whether it is or is not, it’s up for the individual to decide. But he was anything but a puppet for her.
Diane Holbert….endured untold abuse and ridiculousness from Lora. She did it in quiet, if stern, decency. She didn’t run to the media. She didn’t cry at the executive committee meetings. She held her ground. She was not be pushed out. She did not return to her previous job of treasurer (which meant that Office was vacant of a leader for months and required additional work and rehab rehabilitation when the new treasurer was sworn in) Diane completed her term as commissioner.
Lora is complaining about all the sins that she herself has committed in the past. Call it karma, call what you will, but personally I am tired of the politic slow leak she has been.
Good riddance and don’t bother running again.
