Failure to Organize a Vacancy Meeting for Douglas County

December 11, 2024

Re: Failure to Organize a Vacancy Meeting for Douglas County

To Whom It May Concern,

It is troubling to hear that Douglas County Republican Party Chairman Steve Peck has decided not to hold a vacancy meeting to fill the vacant seat previously held by former Commissioner Lora Thomas.

After reviewing the relevant statutes and the bylaws of the Douglas County Republican Party, it is clear that not only is it appropriate for Chairman Peck to call for a vacancy meeting, but he was also required to do so.

Instead, he has chosen to ignore his responsibility to hold this meeting and allow Democrat Governor Jared Polis to choose the replacement for Douglas County Republicans.

While Governor Polis will likely appoint State Senator Kevin Van Winkle to fill the vacancy because Sen. Van Winkle won the 2024 General Election to serve in this specific seat, it is still beyond the pale to witness the Douglas County Republican Chairman abdicate his authority and responsibility to our political rivals.

Hardworking voters are under constant attack by radical Democrats, like Gov. Polis, and by extremist lawmakers, some of whom are currently pushing to eliminate our current Party vacancy process and weaken our Party further. It is unacceptable to see Chairman Peck's inaction and his refusal to safeguard our Party authority and responsibility.

Respectfully,

Dave Williams

Chairman, Colorado Republican Party
